POSTER & ORAL PRESENTATION GUIDELINES

POSTER PRESENTATION GUIDELINES

ISSW poster presentations offer a valuable opportunity to share your work and ideas with the international avalanche community. Poster presentations are unique because they provide a place for personal connection, discussion, and dialogue.

Poster Preparation

Posters can be affixed to the poster board using velcro and thumbtacks, which will be provided.

Please consider the following:

  • Formatting:

    • Maximum size of 60in. width x 36in. height (153cm x 92cm)

    • Fonts

      • Title = 90-120 pt

      • Heading = 70-80 pt

      • Main Text = 36-40 pt

  • Your poster must be legible from 3-5 feet.

  • Clearly label your sections.

  • Carefully consider the amount and readability of your text.

  • Provide a caption and clear description for all figures, tables, and images.

Poster Sessions

Poster sessions are scheduled on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m.

Poster sessions overlap with each day’s social hour.

Poster set-up is at the Riverhouse Convention Center from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. on respective days and also from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM on Sunday, October 8, 2023 for Monday sessions.

The poster hall will be open to attendees from 8:00 a.m.  to 7:00 p.m.

Plan to be available to discuss your poster during the 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. time slot.

We recognize that some scientific content is best displayed in digital format. If necessary, we encourage authors to include a QR code on their poster that directs readers to a site that hosts your digital visualization or an associated publication. You may also bring a small laptop or tablet with you for displaying supplementary material that cannot be included on a static poster. Note that there will not be tables or stands for laptops or tablets as there is only enough space for a poster.

Please remove your poster at the end of your session.

ORAL PRESENTATION GUIDELINES

Oral presentations are the centerpiece of the ISSW and offer an excellent opportunity to share your work and ideas with the international avalanche community.

Format

There are three themed oral sessions scheduled each conference day for a total of twelve sessions. Each session will have a general theme, but under certain circumstances presentations may not fit perfectly into the topic for a particular session.

A session chair will host each session and will introduce the theme, presenters, and keep the session within the allotted time.

General oral presentations will be 12 minutes with 3 minutes for questions from the audience.

Lightning oral presentations will be 6 or 10 minutes, depending on the lightning session, with questions at the end of each session for all presenters.

Preparation

Please try and make your presentation as accessible to as many members of your audience as possible. A wide range of professional and academic experience exists within the ISSW community. The impact of your presentation will depend on your ability to use common language and to illustrate the relevance of your topic to the audience.

Each presentation should strive to foster dialogue between researchers and practitioners. We encourage researchers to discuss the practical application of their topic and we encourage practitioners to discuss how research can help solve operational challenges.

Things to consider:

  • Focus on the main story of your work and use your proceedings paper to dive into details.

  • 30 seconds to 1 minute is often sufficient enough time for each slide.

  • Use text sparingly and support it with photos and figures.

  • Use larger font sizes.

Computers will be available to preview and upload presentations.

Standard format will be 16:9 and presenters are asked to prepare their slides in English.

We will offer both PC (Windows) and Mac (OS X) laptops for running the oral sessions and will support the following formats:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint (PC and Mac)

  • Keynote (Mac only)

  • Adobe PDF (PC and Mac)

  • Prezi (Mac and online)

Check back here later for more information regarding the process to upload your presentation in Bend during ISSW week.
